A RANT.

I have to give you some context before launching into my rant. I have three Instagram handles, "blueeyeddemon" which is my more general personal one, "neal.noakes.books" where I post endlessly about my books, because if don't who will, and "smudgepkmn" where I at the young age of 41 gush about all things pokemon.

I tell you this, because a few days ago, I was followed by the above profile on my Blueeyeddemon account, I reported the account and blocked it.

Now you may think that this is a bit extreme for a new follower.

Well, today, when this profile followed my book insta page, I did the same thing, and I am here to tell you why.

This profile is AI.

The 'woman' is not a real person, the videos are fake, the voice is fake, the travel blog format is fake.

Using reference material, the AI has created a generic, uncanny valley level of "idealised beauty" - the videos are generated, scripted and delivered in a "palatable" way to make the content as appealing as possible, and the fact it is AI is referenced in the material.

As someone who is desperate to become a full time writer, who is working constantly to present my work in a genuine and sincere way, all I can think is "how would I feel if I was a travel blogger seeing this?"

And the answer is angry.

AI is coming for the written word, for art, and apparently for bloggers too.

This is grotesque, it is disgusting, and yet, I worry people won't care, they won't look beyond the sanitised way things are presented, beyond the way the voice sounds or the "girl" looks.

I cannot, and will not, sit back and be silent on AI. It IS theft, it is deception. It is a form of blind control.

How long until AI bloggers start recommending products that their political leanings are telling them to promote - oh wait they already are.

How long until AI begins to try to normalise racial stereotypes from the 'source data' of awful people - oh wait it already is!

How long until AI is used as a weapon, with which women and children can be subjected to abuse by proxy - oh wait, it already is.

How long until my dream, is stolen by machine that can generate books in minutes - oh, wait, it already is.

You ask why does this outrage me?
I ask why is everyone so calm about it?

I spent years working on my book, and people could generate one in minutes, and that leads to readers not wanting to take a chance on authors they haven't heard of previously.

That kills dreams.

This AI travel blogger, is looking to steal from the hands of real travel bloggers, stealing their views, whitewashing and sanitising that content, giving you something pleasant but meaningless, devoid of human realism, all in the name of generating revenues that previously went to real people - creating an era where, ironically, creation dies, people will lose their dreams, and without dreams, what even are we?

I hate generative AI.

Neal.
